Whats draining my battery? SolvedSolved

Ford F-150 2002 F150 167000 miles
When my truck sits overnight, something is draining on the battery. When i open the door the dinger goes off and the radio turns on (off whenever i turn vehicle off). Start truck up and bam... No radio sometimes no wipers. It has a brand new battery i installed a month ago. Testing says alternator is fine. Only new in the last year is a fuel pump.

Damm even I am having a similar kind of issue, I have searched all over the internet and even have posted on number of threads on different forum, no solution seems to work. I am really frustrated, can anyone of you here help me resolve this issue, I am very much tired now
Pappybeare from United States 5 years ago
I have read that a front windshield leak causes the GEM module to short out if at any time you have things that come on and off without you turning them on. It is a box connected directly on top of the under dash fuse box. It is very hard to get out, and they are hard to find for the older trucks. You either have to buy used or remanufactured, and the model number of your part has to exactly match or all of your options will not work. I’m still trying to get one for mine, but haven’t had any luck. I have looked for a cross reference part #, but haven’t had any luck. Even my call to Ford ended with them telling me to find an electronics repair shop that can refurbish mine. I still haven’t found one that will guarantee the part for more than 30 days, and they want me to send my part to them and then wait for them to make the repair and they will mail it back. The cost is astronomical too! To have mine repaired it was $400, and if I want to take a chance on a junkyard part, I can get one for $150. The junkyard part is only guaranteed with an exchange if the part they send don’t work. I can’t find any information on specs, or any testing methods. I’ve even tried to get nomenclature to find out what the model #digits mean. There is mot much good info on this part. I hope this helps. Make sure you have the windshield resealed before replacing the part if that’s what yours turns out to be.

I think that's my problem. When I brought it home. I had break lights and turn signals. Now I have none. Bad arch when putting battery cable on. Positive or negative? What do you think?
Thadj79 from United States 2 years ago
@Action JacksonYes they had bad seals from factory it's the GEm modules.

So driving down the road and the solution came to me, in the form of my under dash fuse panel. It caught fire! Got it out with minimal damage. New fuse panel (and a couple short wire repairs), no more issues! Not my preferred way of finding the issue but it is solved and fixed.
Andy from United States 4 years ago
Did you replace the relay ?
Thadj79 from United States 2 years ago
All 97 to 03 f150s leak at windshield which gets onto the GEM module that's mounted to the back of the fuse box.

If the mini fuse for the windshield wipers is good, then you can try checking the relay fuse next. The relay fuse is responsible for controlling the power supply to the windshield wipers. If the relay fuse is blown, it could be causing the wipers to not work. You can check the relay fuse by looking in the fuse box under the hood or in the interior of the vehicle. Additionally, you may want to check the wiring and connections to the wipers to make sure there are no loose or damaged wires.

I've heard it can be the wiring in the door where it's hinged. They made the harness to short so the ground comes loose. Try opening the door and wobble it open and closed slightly while simultaneously pushing rhw window controls. If it kicks on and off it more than likely a loose ground right there.

Noticing the ABS and wiper fuses are positioned next to each other, I jet spray a 1/2 can (total) of mass air flow sensor cleaner in each side opening of the fuse box-and I’m doin the happy dance!

Just posted instructions on replacing the wiper, turn signal and emergency flashers stalk. Not hard but heed warning disconnecting wire harness. Don't pull wires. You will need Phillips head, flat head and a tiny pick or screwdriver. 30 minute job.
Marcus78 from United States 2 years ago
Replaced wire harness for 01 f-150 5.4L wipers, turn signals, and emergency flashers. Everything was fine. Turned on to check them and now won't shut off. Pulled fuse to shut off fuse was warm (fuse #11) fuse good. Put new in still same. The stalk is new old stock. Any thoughts. Read on another forum to turn on and off fast to no avail. Thanks in advance. The stalk replacement is easy just be very careful with wire harness the wires are short. My first issue was turn signals didn't work. Wires had torn out of plugs into turn signal stalk. New harness and stalk. To remove stalk 3 Phillips on underside of column that will remove lower shroud then turn ignition to on position under column where ignition is there is a silver button. Small that gets pushed in and pull on ignition and it will come out. Remove tilt steering leaver and all will be exposed. 2 t20 star bit screws remove stalk. Be careful with plugs in back wires can pull out. Replace stalk and put back together. Good luck

Bruce from United States 4 years ago
The fact that the radio and door chime will not shut off, even with the key out and the lights off, could be caused by a problem with the electrical system or a malfunctioning component.
Here are a few things you can try:

Check the radio and door chime fuse. The radio and door chime are powered by a separate fuse, and if this fuse is blown, it could cause the radio and door chime to stay on. Locate the fuse panel and check the radio and door chime fuse to see if it is blown or damaged.
Check the radio and door chime wiring. The radio and door chime are powered by a separate wiring harness, and if there is a problem with the wiring, it could cause the radio and door chime to stay on. Check the wiring harness and connectors for any loose, damaged, or corroded wires. Make sure all connections are secure and free of any visible damage.
Check the radio and door chime switch. The radio and door chime are controlled by a separate switch, and if this switch is malfunctioning, it could cause the radio and door chime to stay on. Check the switch to see if it is functioning properly.
Check the radio and door chime module. The radio and door chime are controlled by a separate module, and if this module is malfunctioning, it could cause the radio and door chime to stay on. Check the module to see if it is functioning properly.
If you are unable to identify the source of the problem or if the issue persists after checking these components, I recommend having a mechanic diagnose and repair the issue to ensure that the problem is properly addressed and the vehicle is safe to drive.

I see fluid leaking around the front bumper shroud so I am guessing that rodents chewed on the hoses

My car is still under warranty but the dealership wants me to leave the car for a few days to get it looked at and if it is rodents then it is not a warranty issue andsso I will have to pay for the work

I am a cheapskate and so I will fix it myself, however, I am also the CEO of 'Extreme Procrastinators Umlimited'

I watch a YouTube video of someone removing the shroud and there are five million screws (~12) and my tools are disarrayed from a very recent move that I am yet to unpack from (6 months), I will update you September '37

Interior dome light and windshield wipers don’t work

Ford F-150 1999 V8 Triton 5.4 354621 miles
Wipers do not work and the interior dome light does not work and the power windows and power locks do not work. Is there any correlation? The older man I bought it from had the fuse box looking like this. (see pic) said he use to haul a horse trailer. I don’t know what this is or if it has anything to do with my problem. It feel out one day and I’m not really sure which fuses he had it going into. Also can someone tell me what this is? Other picture. It feel out on my feet one day and my gear selector is extremely loose. Thank you very much.
