Toyota Matrix 2009 Base (1.8L, 5 speed manual)
The best:Frugal on fuel, surprisingly sprightful for such a small car, especially with the five speed. Very generous on storage space.
The worst:Electrical gremlins. Broken rear door lock actuators, and a broken trunk lock actuator. The base model is extremely, if not unusually limited. Doesn't even have a rear windshield wiper, nor does it have intermittent wipers.

  Toyota Matrix 2007 Matrix hatchback
The best:It's been ruining great for $500 everything works in it until the battery died and Within 1 month I put 2 new batteries in it , had a bad wire connection to the positive post but fixed it and all was good til now , the batteries weren't holding a charge very long like maybe 3 days then I had to charge it up or get jump start ,but had everything tested and all were working OK according to computer read out but still had to keep changing battery or jump start every couple days and now all it does is crank over but not start ...checked fuses and are all OK...so Im at a loss with what's up
The worst:It won't start without reason

  Toyota Matrix 2003 Matrix
The best:Very responsive car. It's a stick shift which I prefer. After 256 K miles, the engine still runs great! Very roomie. Lot's of thoughtful interior and exterior features built in by the designers. 😎
The worst:A bit of a tin can. In a major accident, you would fair too well.

  Toyota Matrix 2010 hatchback, Matrix S, 2.4L, 5-Speed Auto
The best:Reliable. 17" rims (low profile) 2.4 liter engine makes it more fun to drive and more capable (I've worked construction and gone camping and haven't gotten stuck with just FWD). I've had it since may 2019 (bought at. Pretty good on gas too 25-28 mpg combined depending on weather. Full synthetic oil changes every 7k-8k. Trans fluid drain and refill at 156k (not flushed, ive heard that causes problems).
The worst:TPMS Sensor needs replaced. Airbag light on after recall repair.
Not very quiet on the highway.
Stock radio unit (replaced when bought).
Wish the backseats had more room like prius V.
All fairly nitpicky notices, except for top two.

  Toyota Matrix 2003 XRS (2ZZ-GE)
The best:The manual 6-speed transmission is super fun to drive and there’s lots of storage. Also makes a great camper. My wife and I can easily sleep in the back when the seats down.
The worst:The side skirts and front spoiler are super fragile and always falling off. I upgraded to a 2005 bumper cover because the 2003 had too many parts.
