Some car auto headlights rely on sensors to determine what angle the car is sitting at. If there is passengers on heavy object in the back the light might be pointing to skyward. So if these sensors don't work the lights won't come on in auto at all. There is normally on on the front and one in the back and picks up the compression of the suspension.
