I have a 2003 explorer xls. Just replaced the terminals, battery and alternator and it was working fine til I got home from taking my mother out for her birthday dinner...went to start it and the lights come on but as soon as I put the key in the acc position it showed all sorts of warning lights then I cranked it over and poof the whole thing went dark, had to take the battery out to charge and waited 14hrs (trickle charge on a 12V charger) and did the same thing! I checked fuses and every relay under the hood and in the passenger compartment but nothing was evident so can anyone give me any ideas?? Please I'm desperate, my vehicle is my life line and without it I feel stuck...

Worrying noise

Ford Explorer 2003  160000 miles
As I start the engine of my vehicle, an annoying noise becomes audible but after driving for some minutes it sometimes stops, and others it can even be softly heard all the time. This noise has become more and more frequent and it seems as though one of the cogwheels is displaced.

Your problem are the chains, which I certainly recommend to change.
Dyer from United States 11 years ago
Broken studs cause hot air leaks and subsequent gasket damages. As it is a metal gasket it vibratres and that is the noise you hear when starting the vehicle. You should then change the studs to some more resistent ones and your problem will be solved.

I know this was posted years ago but thought I should add this in case someone is running into this issue. For those models, if you have this happen, you may want to check the fuel shut off switch located on the passenger-side on the side kick panel. I've seen these trip when you hit a pothole on the freeway. You need to press it back in to reset it in order for the fuel to flow again.

Won't start and some acceleration problems

Ford Explorer 2011 Suv, automatic, 4 wheel drive 690000 miles
So this is the second winter in a row that I verify had to replace my battery multiple times. It's only been a week but again today my car wouldn't start. Also once my car is jumped and running game I'm having problems accelerating. If I need to accelerate quickly my check engine light will come and the car almost stalls. Then sometimes while in drive (usually I notice this when on the highway) sometimes my car will de-accelerate for a couple of seconds and I can hear a high pitched noise. I have no idea what this could be and when my car was just in to have the battery replaced my internal computer showed no other issies. I own a 2011 Ford Explorer with about 70,000 miles on it. I am the second owner and I love in Pennsylvania so our winters can be pretty cold!

The engine won't start

Ford Explorer 2013 2.0 Eco Boost 62137 miles
Thank you in advance. I have a question about my 2013 Ford Explorer (early model). (I'm Japanese, and the following is a translation. ) The other day, my engine suddenly stalled while I was out in a parking lot. The warning message said "oil pressure low" (I think), so I wondered if the engine oil was low... I checked the oil gauge, but it was only slightly low? Maybe? It seemed like a reasonable level, so I figured it was fine. That said, even after turning the key back on, the engine wouldn't start, no matter how hard I tried. Because of the location, I couldn't even call a van... So I w… Read complete

Ignition starting problems

Ford Explorer 1996 4.0l v6 4dr 2wd 176000 miles
I went out to start my car and someone had tried to steal it. The ignition was messed up key turns freely no start no crank. Replaced battery and solenoid( frame) put in new ignition. No crank no start. When put key in run position started off solenoid. Went to turn off car by key and in off position the radio and key in ignition beep stayed on. I think its the key actuator ( pain in a$$ to replace too!) any other ideas? It might be.

You may have to remove both neg and pos terminal, connect them using an extension tool or wrench and leave for 15 minutes in order to drain all power to the PCM. After that 15 repeat how you started it at solenoid.
Jenjen2011 from United States 9 months ago
Mine done this after replacing the battery. Seems to be the PATS System the anti theft system. Your Kris need to be reprogrammed. You can do it yourself if you have 2 keys or go have it done. A lock smith charges about $250

Battery Fully Charged but I get No Crank

Ford Explorer 2003 4.0L 4WD 6CYL XLT 323805 miles
So I unattached the negative battery cable to reset the 4WD high because it would not go back to 4WD Auto. After doing this I've had problems starting the car. Before this not one issue. So the battery is charged reading 12.75V and all interior lights, power locks are functioning. The problem is there is no crank when I turn the key. Nothing, not a sound, no click... Zero. The dash lights up, alert bell rings but nothing from the engine.

O/d flashing indicator light no reverse

Bruce from United States 4 years ago
The overdrive (O/D) flashing indicator light and the lack of reverse could be related issues. A common cause of a flashing O/D light is a transmission problem, such as a slipping transmission or low fluid levels. This can cause the transmission to hesitate when shifting gears, including reverse, and can lead to the whining noise you're hearing.

Everything comes on new battery will not turn over
Jenjen2011 from United States 9 months ago
I have an 2004 Explorer and had the same problem when I replaced my battery. It was the PATS system (the anti-theft) keeping it from even turning over. I had to replace my PCM bc we thought that an over charged battery fried it, and had to have new keys made. There seemed to be a lot of stupid stuff wrong with my explorer and it seriously turned out to be an A/C fuse. Have no idea how that made it seem like my transmission was messed up, or not start. But try putting your keys in it with it turned to the on position, not cracked, just on, for like 15 mins. It usually resets the keys if there isn’t anything else wrong. You can google the correct combos for your vehicle for the keys, but I bet it’s the pats system.

Power Door locks

Ford Explorer 1997 XLT 4wd 6 cylinder 4.0 control trac 137000 miles
My first question would be does anybody know which slot for the power door lock fuse? The second part of this is the other night my door locks started acting like I was just holding them down and it just kept making the same noise that it makes when it locks or unlocks you can hear the motor just keeps going. And it's running my battery down so I wanted to pull the fuse because I don't have a way to fix locks right now. I kind of feel like it has something to do with my sunroof leaked and so the inside of the vehicle got damp I got it dried out and no mold or anything like that but it doesn't mean it didn't hurt the electrical. Any help is appreciated thank you so very much.

I don't think moisture is the issue. Always check fuses for loss of power and or inefficienct power supply. However intermittent controlling of your power locks most likely means there's a short somewhere between power supply and device (driver side power control module. ) also sufficiency within the ground path from power supply to module is important as well.

Timing issues

Ford Explorer 2002 4.0 V6 270000 miles
I replaced the driver side head gasket, put everything back together now it runs a little rough on that side like the timing is off slightly. It stalls when first starting, but when starting a second to time it stays running. It is overhead cam. It doesn't sound like the valve or piston are hitting. Also it is smoking from back side either by the head gasket or in that vicinity. It's not leaking anything on the ground. I know the head isn't warped or cracked and engine surface was flat. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks
