Car jerking during acceleration SolvedSolved

Ford Edge 2021 Titanium  98000 miles
I have a 2021 ford edge titanium, when I am accelerating the car jerks badly until I hit 40 mph then it’ll stop. No check engine light on. Twice I saw a pop up on the dashboard that said “transmission not in park” but it disappeared right away please help !

That is not a lot to go on, so I have a few questions... maybe we can narrow it down.
1. Your jerking, can you feel it in the steering wheel? Or is it the entire car shaking until it finds the gear?
(I am trying to determine if it is transmission based or in your drive line/shafts).
2. Does this happen every time? Or just once in a while?
(Here I am trying to see if it is electrical or mechanical, if you have loose wiring or a short it will be intermitting but mechanical you will feel it more and it should happen almost every time).
3. Does this happen in turns more? Or during straight drives?
(Again, I am trying to determine what components are messing with you the most).
Here are some things that should help you narrow what you are looking at.
Common symptoms or problems
Shuddering, bucking, or jerking: This is especially common at low speeds (around 20-35 mph).
Hesitation or delayed shifting: The transmission takes longer than normal to change gears.
Harsh or rough gear changes: Shifts are abrupt and uncomfortable.
Transmission warning light: This light on the dashboard signals a transmission fault.
Transmission fluid leaks: You might see puddles of fluid under the vehicle.
Burning smell: This can indicate that the transmission fluid is burnt or overheating.

Underlying Causes
Software Issues: Some problems are attributed to the software in the powertrain control module (PCM).
Component Wear: Worn clutch packs in the transmission can cause slipping and rough shifts.
Torque Converter Issues: The torque converter can wear out or have damaged parts.
Fluid Problems: Low fluid levels or dirty, burnt-smelling fluid can cause various shifting issues.
Faulty Components: A bad valve body, clogged transmission filter, or faulty solenoids can all lead to erratic behavior.
Leakage: A loose or missing bolt on the start-stop accumulator endcap is a known cause of transmission fluid leaks.

What to Do if You Experience These Issues
1. Check Transmission Fluid:
Inspect the fluid level and condition. If it's low or looks dark and burnt, this needs attention.
2. Scan for Error Codes:
A professional can scan the transmission control module (TCM) for error codes.
3. Consider Maintenance:
Regular transmission fluid and filter changes can prevent issues.
4. Seek a mechanic:
If problems persist, have a qualified mechanic diagnose the issue. They can determine if a software update, component replacement, or a more significant repair like a transmission rebuild is needed.

I wish you the best,

Hello, car not is not really shaking but jerking as if I’m slightly slamming on the brakes if that makes sense. This every single time, not when turning it more of what you describe in #3 but no lights are on and no fluids are leaking

@IndyOuch,
Since it is happening every time, then you do have a serious problem. Take it in as soon as you can to a mechanic or it will eventually fail, and you will not be able to move at all. If it is the rear PTU then you are looking at close to 6k in repairs.
You could do the repairs yourself, but do know, your work is not warrantied like a Ford dealership would be.
I am sorry that I could not give you better news,

Transmission Issue

Ford Edge 2020  76000 miles
Quick background -- My car stranded me on the side of the road twice in April/May of 2025. It would not move. The car would run, but would not drive forward (or in reverse). When I would shift the car to drive it would do nothing. I could press the accelerator but it wouldn't even rev. When I would turn the shift knob to park, the car would stall. It would then restart, but still no change in behavior. Both times the car was towed to the dealer for service. First visit, the Gear Shift Module was replaced related to an error code. Car broke down again approx 100 miles later with exact same symp… Read complete
