It was the EPS mod which is literally connected on/with the rack and pinion. Sooooo it’s going to cost a pretty penny…

This fault comes up on the consul and you can't start the car. It happened twice today and I managed to get it going each time after about 15 tries. It seems you have to press the ignition start at the same time as moving the steering wheel. I have now left the car at the dealers yard but it is Sunday and there is no one there. Any one else had this problem?

I have had a result with Holden NZ who are the agents here in NZ for Malibu's. Their comment was that a module in the steering column tends to suffer from people holding onto the steering wheel while getting in and out of the car and then plays up. The agent was going to charge me $489.00 for the part and then labour on top of that. I indicated to them that I wasn't at all happy about that and they came back and said that Holden NZ would pay for the part but not the labour. They got the part down from Auckland and two days later I was up and running. It is obviously a fault known to them.

It's only some weeks since I've bought a Malibu 2005 LX, and the steering has already started presenting problems. As I start the engine it works properly, but only after some minutes it hardens considerably. I've been told that the problem is the steering wheel's post or the diaphragm spring which is located under the steering wheel. Do you know where I can get these car parts, used not new?

You are having some sensor or circuit inconvenient, most probably an agency failure.
I had this problem with a Malibu 2006 and the cause is in a sensor that carries the steering. You can find this car part by itself, isolated from the rest of the electronic steering parts.

One day my car announced a power steering failure and consequently the steering wheel stiffened. I then turned the car off and on again and it seemed as if nothing had occurred. However, after several days the problem returned and it is becoming more and more frequent as time goes by. Certainly yours is a frequent Malibu failure. You should go to the agency and demand a replacement of your power steering column, no matter whether the warranty has expired or not. In the least of the cases, you can choose to buy it online and install it yourself, it is not hard work as you do not need to reprogramme anything. Hope my advice helps you.
I've been told that the failure might be in a little engine that is located under the steering wheel, and that it can either be repaired or changed by a new one.

When driving, I have to hold the steering wheel at an angle if not I don't or go to turn. There's a rattle/shake. I can feel it in the steering wheel and gas pedal.

Mine did the same thing. Then one day the tie end rod broke right as I was trying to turn a sharp right turn in a curve. I was lucky not to hit anyone. I had to drive home turning left only. Had that fixed but it still has a roaring sound from driver side wheel. It shakes and feels like is weaving on the front
