They are activated with the lever that is placed on the left side of the steering wheel. They indicate which side our car is going to move to the other drivers. They are important to communicate with other drivers while there is traffic, as they show other our future actions, which contributes to traffic safety.
Is the front blinker on same side working? Some vehicles the remaining bulb that isn't burnt will flash 2x the normal blink to indicate a turn signal bulb is blown.
Another option is if your vehicle isn't newer and using the led or new style bulb with out regulating the power the bulb may blink faster than normal. In this case a load resistor is required.
Tip: Because these are LEDs, your car might "hyper-flash" (blink very fast) because it thinks a bulb is out. You may need to install a load resistor or a compatible LED flasher relay to fix this.
