Overheating

Hyundai Elantra 2012 Limited 100000 miles
After driving for maybe 20 min. In 87deg. F. The temperature gauge goes to red line. Note: should fans go on by the radiator when temperature goes up?
Is their a sensor or fuse that we should check or me being old school it would be the thermostat?

Thermostat is a good first move but there is also a cooking temperature sensor that should be on the block. Yes the fans should kick on if they are too hot. Have u checked the hoses for the correct temps or to see if pregnant? Another thing to check most people forget about is the heater core if u turn on the heat does the temp go down?if it does then it's the thermostat if not possibly the heater core may need replaced and please fill the antifreeze up thru the reservoir with the car running so it doesn't create a bubble that will cause overheating until the air is released from the system.
