How often should I change the CVT oil? SolvedSolved

Nissan Altima 2007  85000 miles
Hello, I've just bought the vehicle but I think I should change the gearbox fluid and I don't know what kind of oil it takes nor how often should I change it. Any idea?

CVT transmission uses a special oil, so be careful not to use a regular oil for it. You can find several options in any specialized stored, such as autozone. I'd recommend Lubgard, it is affordable and it worked great for me. It takes around 8 litres of oil. Regards!

Is there any kind of filter in the transmission or do I only need to remove the transmission drain plug, drain it and fill it again?
marcia from United States 9 years ago
The oil filter of the CVT is internal, and you can only clean it by washing it thoroughly. For that you would need to remove the cover underneath the gearbox, but you should do that only if the oil is sticked and stuck there. Usually changing the oil is enough

You can usually buy all the parts you need in the shop itself. I usually do it that way, as the parts usually have the same price than in auto part shops. The most expensive part are the hours of labor. Regarding the spark plugs, I would recommend at least platinum NGK, if you can get iridium or laser platinum much better. As for the oil, my local dealership recommends Roshfrans 20W-50. Finally, for the air filter you can use Gonher and also use the Lucas fuel injector cleaner. With that you are all set!
gil from United States 9 years ago
Be careful, that model should take a 10w30 or 10w40 oil at most, no more. What they tell you about needing a tune up when it reaches 50K miles or similar is not true. As long as the check engine light is off, and you don't have any smoke or problems, spark plugs in a modern car last a long time.

Noise in the timing chain SolvedSolved

Nissan Altima 1999  200000 miles
I bought my car 4 months ago and everything was fine, then 2 months ago I did an oil change and a noise appeared (as if the engine was diesel). This was a couple of minutes after starting it, once it warmed up. I took it to the mechanic to change the timing kit but the noise is still there. He said that the monoblock is welded and that the problem might be there: that it got damaged, was welded and a lubrication channel might be obstructed. Do you think that could be the problem?

I took it to another mechanic, the oil pump was fine, he suggested that it could be a lubrication line that might be obstructed, and that we could also try fixing the chain tensioner. What would this imply?
cecil from United States 8 years ago
I had the same problem, they checked the camshaft and timing kit, which was replaced. After this the noise stopped, but only for 2 days. A friend who also has an Altima and is a mechanic told me that if I don't use an original kit the noise will never go away. In my case I used a generic one. Let me know if you have more information

Problem solved: the hydraulic tensioner was changed for a mechanical tensioner and everything worked fine after that.

My car hesitates or stumbles

Nissan Altima 2003  288000 miles
I have a problem with my car, 3 months ago the engine started with a hesitation or stumble when reaching 2000 rpm. First, my husband did the tune up (the only thing he didn't do was changing the fuel filter, as in Autozone he was told that it was only sold together the fuel pump). We then took it to the mechanic and he changed the crankshaft sensor. Also, the check engine light was on. The mechanic says it is the timing belt, but we don't know if we should try to fix or get a new engine. A couple of weeks ago we were driving in an uphill road and the hesitation started again, do you think is's… Read complete

My car had problems similar to yours, but I didn't get so many errors, only P1101 I think it was. It had to do with the maf sensor (mass flow sensor) which I changed and solved the problem. The issue I had was that I could not push my engine beyond 2300 rpm before It chokes. It is possible that the new crankshaft sensor they used on your car was not original (as they are much more expensive), and those don't usually last long as they have poor quality. Even then, I don't think the sensor was causing your original problem. I would advice you to take it to a Nissan diagnostic specialist so they can tell you exactly what is wrong with your Altima. I've had this car for 2 years and this is the only problem I've ever had.

Thanks and good for you, we still have our car stopped. Right now it is at our third mechanic, as the first one said it was an electric problem but it wasn't, another one made us buy some parts that did not fix the problem (and then wanted us to change the computer, which is really expensive and it is not under warranty) and now we are with another Nissan specialist someone recommended us that thinks the problem is in the cylinder head. I hope we can finally fix this!!

Hi, the most common cause for stallings and jerks are the crankshaft and camshfats sensors, they are sold together originals.
Obed from United States 9 years ago
I'm sure the problem is the MAF sensor, which measures the mass of air flow and sits after the air filter.

I have a Nissan Sylphy 2013, loss of power when accelerating and have to pump the gas peddle before it picks. What do u recommend I do
frankie from United States 9 years ago
I had the same problem twice with my 2003 Altima 2.5. When I tried to accelerate rpms did not go beyond 1500rpm, as if it choked. The first time it was due to the MAF sensor and the second time was 7 months after that. At the beginning I thought It was the same sensor again, so I even bought a new one, but it turned out to be a different new problem. I first took it to a couple of a mechanics that did not agree on the problem, and then finally to the Nissan specialist who by only hearing the noise could identify the problem: the catalytic converter was clogged. He removed it, and problem gone. He said I could put a new one, but It was too expensive, so que replaced it with a straight pipe.

Hi, Did you figure out problem with your Altima? I'm having same, with my 2000, with only 90K Mikes on it?
Charles from Canada 8 years ago
There was a Nissan recall announced July 7,2006, (see "carcomplaints.com"). I have the stalling problem and noticed the recall. I called Nissan Canada and the recall is still accepted. I have just booked the recall repair. I have already had the cam shaft sensor replaced very recently. Hopefully, this Works. Here is the car complaints information --- "Summary: On certain passenger vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine, the crank angle sensor is affected by temperature variations. Under certain driving conditions, these variations in temperature can be large enough to cause a brief interruption in the signal output from the sensor. Consequences: If the interruption in the signal from the sensor is so brief that the eletronic conrol module (ECM) logic does not have time to diagnose the condition, the engine may stop running without warning while the vehicle is driven at a low speed increasing the risk of a crash. Action: Dealer will reprogram the ECM free of charge. Overall, a poor vehicle that can bleed you dry while safety is significantly compromised. This recall repair will be the last money spent on this vehicle. If it stalls again, it's gone.

Oil consumption SolvedSolved

Nissan Altima 2000  230000 miles
I own an Altima 2000, 4 cylinders, 2.4 engine and would appreciate if anyone could tell me how many oil liters my car should carry and whether there is some special oil I should consider buying. Up to now, I have been choosing Castrol 20/50, which oil do you recommend?

Hi, HORTENSE. The Altima you have needs 4 liters of oil and which one to choose depends on the use you give to your vehicle. If you give it an ordinary use, then the one you have been using suits you, but you should take into consideration that it expires. If you use it quite a lot in the street, a synthetic oil should be considered. It is more expensive but it is worth it. If you are planning to change the spark plugs, I certainly recommend the original ones, Nissan. Good luck!

Engine noise

Nissan Altima 2003  127000 miles
When starting the car in cold, a noise appears as though metals where touching themselves, coming from the oil pump's location. It seems like the pump could not suck the oil properly. The engine released some blue smoke and had to be repaired, and many other parts have been changed, including: cylinder head gasket, oil pump, distribution chain, crankshaft and camshaft sensors, water pump, damper, battery, alternator, ignition coil and engine holders. I have not changed the engine's oil because I was told it was clean enough, can this be the problem? I was also thinking about the IVT or solenoid control valve, which controls the oil's pressure. Can you tell me about your experience? Thank you!

Many failures

Nissan Altima 2012
I own an Altima 2012 which has presented lots of inconvenients: oil leaks through the crankcase, the car jerks considerably, it does not accelerate as it should, the radiator was damaged and it has suffered an overheating problem due to the antifreeze deficit.

The power loss failure can be related to a damaged catalytic converter, which is a manufacturing problem that car model has. You can try removing the converter and your problem should be solved. Good luck.
shay from United States 9 years ago
Altima cars have got oil pump and camshaft manufacturing problems. You should inform your inconveniences to the agency and it should be repaired without charging you.
