I had similar problem with my 04 rio base 4cyl. Does it run sluggish at times also? Is the smoke immediate, thick constant or have a odor? It could possibly be a clogged catalytic converter like my situation. I would have the exaust checked, try cleaning the mass air flow sensor& plug, pull spark plugs and check the gaps with a gap tool see if the gaps are ALL correct to ur cars requirements(pre gaped plugs are sometimes incorrect) bc if ur not gettin equal and proper fire to all cylinders it could cause it to tun lean or rich & create heavy emissions/smoke. Also check for any sign of moisture, oil, or burnt/fouled if really chared to whitish brown color which ones are better or worse. Etc I hope you have found or find and get it fixed. I wish knew more to help. Good luck.

Engine noise

Kia Rio 2014  9800 miles
It was only after 22 days of buying the car, a jingle started to be heard. I reported my problem to the agency and told me that it was either due to my country's fuel, damaged injectors or an engine noise which could not be repaired. It sounds terrible, as if it were an oil car without maintainance. The solution has not been found yet.

The jingle of the engine can have many possible causes. The first and most probable one is using a low octane fuel for the type of engine or a bad quality one. Other causes might be: overheating of the combustor due to a poor mixture, inappropriate, damaged or worn spark plugs, or even an injector failure. All these are reasons for the explotion to be produced before the right time. The noise is produced when this fast ignition is combined with the one that occurs in another part of the compartment caused by the spark coming from the spark plug. It should be clear, then, that the jingle does not have to be repaired simply because it is annoying, but also because the engine can suffer huge damages. The jingle might also be caused due to air being sucked in the intake manifold, either through the gasket or the injectors' o-rings. You should first check the position of the distribution chain, as well as the crankshaft and camshaft sensors, to see that they are synchronized. Then, clean and check the injectors and the fuel pressure. Hope it helps you find the solution.
