Engine won't start

Hyundai Elantra 2013 2.0L limited 75498 miles
Wife and I were out shopping today, Stopped at the market to pick up groceries. Headlights and radio work fine, but engine would not turn over. Got a jump start from Hyundai roadside assistance(good service) and drove the car for about 30 minutes to recharge the battery. Arrived at home, turned off the ignition. Tried to restart the car, but the engine wouldn't turn over. Headlights, radio, pwr windows, seats, etc, all work fine. Checked alternator belt tension, and it seemed to be ok. Didn't pull battery to have it checked. Any suggestions?

If the battery is under a certain charge then a jump will work and the lights will work but it won't be able to recharge from the altenator .take it to a shop like Canadian tire or "the us equivalent " and get then to check it. Usually done free

I notice the same has been happening with my 2014 Elantra GL. Did you ever find out what was causing this?

Reading online feels a lot like Neutral Safety Switch / Inhibitor Switch as someone else also pointed out.

I'd say get a voltmeter tested alternator output it should be 14 volts without the lights on down to 12 if they are. If the lternator is putting out the voltage is necessary check yor contacts of your battery post see if they're corroded they may look clean on top but underneath they still may not be making contact

The inhibitor switch needs replacing!

I’m in Brisbane, Australia & had the same issues! So frustrating!
Every time I was in a rush to be somewhere!

1st time, I had the battery replaced. 2 weeks later my car wouldn’t start every second day, then weeks later- 4 times in 1 day!

Most times it would start after 8 tries - but the last time - it wouldn’t start after 25 goes! 😤

Had to walk all my groceries home, then walk back before my car got towed!

Roadside assistance tried to start charging me $85 callout free + tow fee, then the service centre wanted to charge me $160 to tell me what’s wrong with it!
Even though i have gold cover warranty!
I told them all where to go!

So after several hours of online research MYSELF... (& I know NOTHING about cars!)
I came to the conclusion that it was the Inhibitor switch!

At my next service I asked them to check what the problem is (after complaining to the Car Dealership Manager), they checked for free, however couldn’t find any faults / issues! 🙄

The Manager told the service guys to order in the part & change it anyway (due to my persistence) and guess what????
No issues since!! 😱🥳

The new Inhibitor Switch part is a slightly different shape from the original.
So if your car isn’t under warranty anymore, contact Hyundai & they should supply the part for Free!
Otherwise it’s only a $20 part & takes 10 mins to change over. There is 1 good YouTube video of a guy showing it.
I have a 2013 Hyundai Elantra, it had only done 23,000 klm’s. I’m female & the roadside assist guy kept trying to tell me it’s definitely something more serious like the starter motor etc 🙄
I told him there’s no way it could be that!
Anyways, hope this helps a few more annoyed & frustrated people out there! 👍🏼😊

Of a 2002 Chevy Cavalier LS 2.2 L and it's and a number four in the van as a but I can start it by jumping pins 87 and 30 with the crank relay the 10 amp fuse ignition fuse was blown I replaced that didn't help the cigarette lighter fuse keeps blowing and the dome light keeps coming on when I'm stopping so certainly something electrical is going on I did just replace the ECU I went through the steps to get the Anti-Theft off and it starts so that can be the problem I just have to jump the pins any help would be greatly appreciated... Also like the top two rows of fuses inside the car the panel or not showing voltage but are not blown either so I have that going on too so I guess that's the power side not the control side I don't know I'm just starting to learn a lot about this as I'm trying to fix it but I still have no success after 2 months of trying

That particular year may have what they call an anti theft sensor in the ignition. Have you replace the ignition switch or has they key got wet or magnetized? You may need t9 have the sensor replaced in your fob or key. The sensor in the steering column isn't reading your key. So it's the car and your fault but not the kids

Engine rotates but wont start in the morning

Hyundai Elantra 2004  80000 miles
My Car won't start in the cold morning. Engine rotates but does not fire. I thought something to do with oil pressure sensor connector problem, as when I spray wd40 on all connectors like air flow, oil pressure etc, it starts but again in few days it gives the same problem.

Have to keep the oil at a certain temp it will be too cold for the oil to the to the block. When u spray with the wd40 it warms those connections to gain fluid movement. My suggestion is maybe a Benson burner or possibly a heavier weight oil for the colder months to avoid freezing. Seasonal oil change lol. This also helps prevent burning the oil and the sludge.

Engine failure

Hyundai Elantra 2014  31068 miles
Purchased new in 2014. All maintenance done according to recommendations. I have all paper work for oil changes. At 50,000 Kim's ticking in engine started. New engine installed in2016. Today I took my car in for engine ticking, told I needed a new engine. Mileage is 99,999 Kms. Unbelievable that a car would require 2 new engines by 100,000 kms. There is some serious engineering issues with this engine. Now I'm scared my car will catch fire or just malfunction and cause an accident. Hyundai needs to be held accountable for these problems. Major law suit in US. Looking to see if one has been started here.

Engine needs to be replaced

Hyundai Elantra 2014 Automatic sedan 70000 miles
My 2014 Hyundai Elantra is lady driven, well maintained. The oil light started flashing just before Christmas which led to multiple visits to the dealership. There is tapping coming from the engine. I was told the entire engine is gone, and as it is just outside the warranty it will cost $9,000+ to replace. Dealership is not very helpful. I expected the car to last more than 130,000km. Poor value for money and buyer beware!

Bella You need to Register your Complant with Hyundai Canada. There is a recall on 1.4 million cars and SUV s in the world with stemming from Piston Slap that's what Hyundai calls it Fight them as they are pushing customers into new cars and adding Debt of old car onto you. Better for them a financial ruin for the customer I'm in the same boat. It wouldnot matter if the car was painted with Lemons it is a Hyundai Manufacturing failure and NOT the customers fault it doest say the date on your comment but mine started 1000km over warrenty in Oct 2017 Do more research and make it public I have been in touch with OMVIC Transport Canada Safty Dept Marketplace and Global TV.

Periodically engine won't start

Hyundai Elantra 2013 elantra gt se 55000 miles
Automatic brake peddle doesn't depress and when I press the push button at the same time, all lights come on but no ignition. Years ago when the issue first started, I could wait 10 minutes and the car would recalibrate. Now I wait an hour plus. So far its always started after the wait. It doesn't like sitting in the hot sun, so I'm not sure if there's a sensor that may trigger this. Car hasn't seen snow. Any ideas... I see by many forms this is a common problem and no sense taking it to the dealer if its working.

I called on the 26 again they told me no one had looked at it yet call back in 48hrs I did so and still no report. This happen several more times till finally last Thursday I was told of the dealer was notified to reach out on the 23. I had heard from no one so I called last Fri and got the run around I will call back on Mon the26 of March to see what's up. Hyundai Elantra Engine Problems

Hyundai Elantra 2013  78000 miles
My 2013 Elantra recently developed a loud engine tick which I thought was due to the cold weather. I decided to get it checked out anyway so I made an appointment with my local Hyundai dealer. I had done extensive research before taking the car in, and to my dismay there were HUNDREDS of reports of engine problems in this model car...enough to issue a recall but none has ever been issued. Hyundai "prides" itself on it's awesome warranty, but this only applies to the first owner of the vehicle. Unstable revs, trembling, stalls, power loss

Hyundai Elantra 1998  10000 miles
I have a Hyundai 98 and, after some minutes of driving without any inconvenients, the car starts losing power when accelerating, revolutions become unstable and drop until the car stalls. Sometimes it even feels as if the engine were trembling. I've already changed spark plugs, candles, fuel pump and pistons, and even checked the car's cylinder head, but my problem is still there.

This happened to me and it was the IAC valve, which controls the acceleration. You can by cleaning it but, if the problem remains, you will need to change it for a new one.
Naz from United States 9 years ago
What samson is saying is true, it is the IAC vale that is failing. It is not hard to change it: you disconnect the battery, insert the valve, again the battery in its place and that's it. Hope it helps!
Anton from Australia 7 years ago
Yep, same issue - I had the problem start on me after the car was sitting in not too hot direct sun outside. EVERY TIME it slowed to a stop at lights, in slowntraffic etc itbstalled and needed to be started and revs kept high, which wasn't stably able to be done. So what causes this and what's the fix ?
Jugheas from Canada 7 years ago
I had the same issue and it was the alternator that needed replacing. It went undiagnosed for 3 years. Hesitation when accelerating and also a lot of blown head lights almost every 3 months I had to replace them. I thought it was the wiring to the distributor cap anD also replaced that. But the alternator did the trick. I discovered it one day when I had the car idling for 20 minutes and it died on its own. The alternator was partially functioning but under load wasn't producing enough current.

I am a mechanic and, by the things you are talking about, I would definitely say it is a coil's failure. There are two types of coils for the Elantra, one with a single connection and another one with three. Check which one is yours.

Smartblonde from United States 7 years ago
Thermostat is a good first move but there is also a cooking temperature sensor that should be on the block. Yes the fans should kick on if they are too hot. Have u checked the hoses for the correct temps or to see if pregnant? Another thing to check most people forget about is the heater core if u turn on the heat does the temp go down?if it does then it's the thermostat if not possibly the heater core may need replaced and please fill the antifreeze up thru the reservoir with the car running so it doesn't create a bubble that will cause overheating until the air is released from the system.

bcbusiness248 from United States 8 years ago
Check the pcv valve, its on the valve cover had the same problem engine couldnt vent, pressure builds up causing hesitation and stalling, valve cover oil leak or other oil leak usually accompanies this issue.
GregZ from United States 5 years ago
Something to check is the voltage at the battery. The battery only starts the car and the alternator generates power. A battery is 12.6V or 12.8V when the car is off. When the car is running the battery is being powered by the alternator and you should read more like 14.6 volts on the battery posts. Easy to check with a multimeter. I had an exhaust leak under the hood and that was killing the alternator. Sometimes the alternator will make voltage and then sometimes it would be dead and the battery would get low. Something to look into is the alternator as this also doesn't throw a code to make a check engine light come on.
