Electrical problem maybe?

Ford Ranger 2009 2.5tdi double cab  120000 miles
I’ve had a new engine put in truck, it ran fine but had engine management light on. When I took it back they changed theEGR valve. It ran ok for a bit, then it started doing the following. The Speedo and rev counter fluctuate up and down randomly, but when I plug a one reader in it doesn’t do this. Any ideas

2017 FORD Ranger 3.2 diesel at times wont start

Ford Ranger 2017 Ford Ranger 21000 miles
Sometimes the truck can go for a week without a problem and then you try to start it and it clicks twice like a dead battery and other times it keeps cranking and I let go of the key and cranks until I turn the switch back to the off position. I wait about 3-5 minutes and it starts right up. I took it to the dealer and they cant find any error codes but I am the second owner and I saw a report that Ford changed the computer for the same reason so the first owner must have unloaded on me because no one can fix the problem.

Thanks Ford tells me to bring the truck in when I have the problem but it never acts up when I take it to them. I saw on the internet some people with the same problem say to change the starter because when Ford checks the voltage it is ok but they claim their is some type of interference going from the starter to the crank sensor. Please let me how it works out for you. Ford change the computer and I still have the same problem. Thanks

Check your foot brake pedal if it's hard and will not depress all the way it will not start take the hand brake off put it in neutral rock the vehicle until foot brake depresses put back in to park and it will start.
Local MECH from other 2 years ago
Any reason why the brake pedal hardens? I'm having similar issues.
Ford mechanic from United Kingdom 2 years ago
@Local MECHSorry late getting back to you, the hard brake pedal is telling you that it's registered that your transmission has not entered into parking mode correctly and will not allow you to start the vehicle.
Rossi from United Kingdom 2 years ago
@Ford mechanicWhat is the quick solution as it happened to me a couple of days ago. I kept moving the gear lever and eventually it did start but it was embarrassing as nobody could leave the car park.
Ford mechanic from United Kingdom 2 years ago
@RossiWhile your in the vehicle gentle push into park remove ignition key lock doors wait 5 to 10 seconds unlock doors as though your entering the vehicle then restart ,it should have reset.
Rossi from United Kingdom 2 years ago
@Ford mechanicCheers I will try that if it does it again 👍

Having the same issue won’t start and break pedal won’t depress. Per mechanic no error on scanning but need to replace run/start relay, start relay and pcm relay…
Ford mechanic from United Kingdom 9 months ago
@ArvinThe error is the parking sensor, the ecu as not registered that the vehicle is in park mode, switching of and locking the doors for a couple of minutes resets the ecu.

Computer needed reset and indeed there are no fuses for low beam nor tail lights. Thx.
Puke Ukengo from other 4 years ago
In the the Ford rangers the BCM or body control module are fitted with the field effect transistor there for if a short occurs the gate closes no voltage is supplied to low beam it prevents the fuse from shorting out or circuit overloading blowing the fuse, possible cause circuit short to ground etc or aftermarket accessories such as spot lamps fitted.to solve the issue take your Ford to a Ford dealership and they will do a diagnosis on your issues, secondly if the problem still present they will run a pcm/bcm reprogramming,if the lights still does not comes on replace the BCM,thanks hope this information help.
J Bodley from Australia 4 years ago
I'm glad its not just me with this problem. My left headlight stopped working but still had high beam, so I bought a pair of new globes and replaced them. Still didn't work. I rang Ford and they explained I must bring the car in for a reset, i'm thinking your joking. OK, $55 later, head light is working. One week later, my left tail light stops working. I rang Ford and asked if we need to plug in the computer again and they said the tail lamps are not controlled by the same. They convinced me there was damage to the wiring loom and remove the tub and look for damage. Well!!! Not a five minute job, removed the tub and found nothing. Put the car back together and what do you know, the tail lamp was working again. My left headlight has now stopped working on 4 occasions and now has cost over $200 to reset the computer each time. Today I took the car in to do another reset and it wont accept the fault, so no reset no headlight. Rats have been present under the hood, which I treated immediately and they did minimal damage, but Ford said pull out the battery and wiring loom and look for damage. OK, I'm a sparky, no problem, 3 hours later. All this to no avail, no damage at all. Still no headlight, must go back to Ford for another reset, as I had the battery out, nothing else works.
Sorry to ramble on, but this does your head in and this car is 3 years old and just out of warranty, so thanks for your input, I really appreciate it, looks like probably a new BCM, I hope these are not too expensive. Regards JB.

I own a Ranger PX2, 2014 model. I have had the Body Control Module (BCM) reset on low beam by my local mechanic twice now because of low beam not working. First case was only left side then both sides. Each reset cost money. It is my belief that when I connect our caravan to the PX2 the vehicle does not accept the led lights of the van. When I operate the right hand indicator it flashes quickly with van connected. Had a Hidrive canopy fitted in place of the tub, it has led lights but no problem for PX2 , indicators work fine. Phoned Hidrive, they fit resistors in wiring to lights because they knew of a problem with Rangers BCM when used with led lights. Found out about a wiring connector that plugs into the 12 pin socket on PX2 and has a 12 pin socket the van then plugs into. The connector is about 300mm long and cost $83 in Australia. This is a factory part and I suspect it is fitted with resistors to avoid the PX2 headlights issue and make the van appear to have conventional bulbs. When I connect a box trailer with conventional globes there is no problem.
I have ordered the connector and the supplier said there are a lot on order, so this may be an indication that the BCM does not recognise led bulbs and could be a common problem. I should also mention that the 2014 Ranger was fitted with conventional bulbs and not leds. Hoping this connector fixes my problem.
Hieu from Australia 7 months ago
Try to disconnect Battery for 30 minutes, then connect back. It may work like normal, BCM reset
Gordo from Australia 7 months ago
Problem now appears to be fixed. Did buy the factory lead and it has built in resistors connected from all actives to ground. Ie left and right turn, brake and park etc. Have now had resistors connected into trailer circuit. All good so far.

Maybe need to reset the battery monitor sensor. In the new models there's a 'turn ignition/ press brake' - sequence... but I'm not sure how or if you can do it yourself in older models. Need a mechanic with a computer to hook up to it and reset the battery monitor sensor. Takes all of 10 seconds to do. Ask them how much for a call out to do it and haggle them with the leverage that it will only take them 10 seconds of they try charging anything too ridiculous.

A refurbished BCM costs just over $1000 Australian dollars from a Victorian firm Precision Engine Components. Apparently they will refurbish, repair your faulty BCM, requiring sending your underdash fuse BCM unit away. Second hand appear to be around $300 - $400 Australian dollars from salvage yards. Another Victorian supplier Stedi can provide a 'specific' and I mean specific resistance Canbus cable conversion to trick the BCM into allowing LED bulbs to be recognized as similar resistance for the Ranger,
Apparently, the years affected are Ranger PX1 2014 -15 and all Mazda BT 50's 2011 to present. Ranger 2011 -2013 and 2016 on are not affected, go figure? BCM was modified then changed again after 2015.

It is possible with a relay to use the working side low beam light to trigger the independently powered relay which then operates both low beam headlamps, if the BCM has a fault and cannot be reset.

Stalls when driving

Ford Ranger 1996  180000 miles
Hi everyone, please help me. Some weeks ago, the ABS light started turning on occasionally and it now remains this way. I don't know if it has something to do but I've noticed the air conditioning is not working any more. After driving for some minutes in the city, I noticed a power loss; the vehicle slowed down and suddenly felt a jerk as if the engine wanted to stall. This event repeated two to three times until it finally stalled. At that moment, the engine could only be started after the third attempt. The following day, after driving for three blocks, the car stalled. In this opportunity,… Read complete

Check the engine's ground wire, it might be that the heat or movements made the screw loosen or get damaged, as everything you are talking about is electric. It might be that with the jerks and movements, the computer has desprogrammed and that is why it is giving that failure. Check it as well.

Common issue with the cluster apparently. When your battery goes out it surges a little and it cooks the small wires in the unit. May very well just need a cluster replacement if it isn’t throwing codes
Shirley from United Kingdom 3 years ago
Hi Jason. I have been having endless problems with my 3.2 wildtrak. The battery keeps going flat. Taken it to Ford who says nothing wrong with the battery or alternator but I must make sure everything is switched off...which I have been doing since the first time it happened. AA also say nothing is wrong with batt and alt but can't tell me what the problem is. The last time I had to jump start it a week or so ago, it also now shows zero fuel and orange fuel light won't go off although the tank is full. Have you had any luck fixing yours? Would really appreciate some advice on how to sort this out. I have spoken to a couple if garages and they say they don't deal with those problems:(
Thanks,
Shirley

Dale from Australia 2 years ago
Ford are dumb and haven’t put in a cut to accessories when the ranger is off so you will need to physically unplug everything to stop it draining your battery.

The charge system also does too good of a job at charging and a battery tester won’t recognise you need a new battery as the old one will continue to be pushed into peak charge when you drive it despite the battery not holding that charge while off and stationary.

Fuel light is likely to be a cluster issue as a result of a surge in the battery. Once a battery starts to die in a higher km Ranger it will start to fry the small components in your cluster.

Rangers have cluster gauge issues all the way from 2012-2017 and the only way to fix it is to replace the whole cluster. Very confusing and annoying problem. I would sell your 3.2 very soon as these engine start having endless problems as early as 125,000km. Terrible variable flow oil pump starts to fail, bad/scoring materials used in the piston oil return rings, bad valve stem seals, you intercooler is probably already filled to the brim with blow bye. The 2.2L gives you the same problems but is smaller and less complicated to work on but the 3.2 is insanely hard to work on and have tendencies to blow up at the turbo or oil pump which ends up in a $12,000 engine replacement.

Injector failure

Ford Ranger 2013 supercab 300000 miles
Hi. My 3. 2 Ford Ranger t6 simultaneously kills injectors. I have changed, the tank pressure pump, the injector pump and common rail as well as the injectors. It will fail on cylinder 1 injector, if I replace it, it will fail cylinder 3 or 5 injector.

If the truck is parked and i rave the truck hard, above 2000rpms, nothing happens, but once I drive it and try to do a hard acceleration, the injectors will start to simultaneously fail again

I replaced all injectors with new ones feeling that maybe the repaired ones had an issue, the same thing eventually happened.

I now feel it is an electrical problem or error code message from the computer box... I need help

Car cranks but won't start

My ford ranger 2.2 won't start after major repair. The fuel pump in the tank runs non stop and also the starter will only crank for less than 5 seconds. I've noticed that the fuel pump only acts normal when I take out the pcm relay then I bought a new relay but it still doesn't act normal. Once the relay is fitted in the pump runs non stop until I turn the key to the off position.

The pump runs for more than a 2 minutes then finally switch off followed by a clicking sound in the pcm relay so I really don't know what to do from here

My ford ranger cranks ,starts and then cut off again. I replaced my old engine with another engine, turbo charger, throttle board. It usually cranks and then starts again after a few minutes or hours. Sometimes it goes into safe mood but after a few minutes it removes itself again and sometimes it stops whilst trying to reverse it. What might be the problem?I've tried putting it on the machine bt the only issue being shown is to do with the rear speed sensors but my mechanic believes this has nothing to do with it cranking, starting and then failing to start again whilst showing a battery light and oil light switch light on the dashboard.

Chook from Australia a year ago
Check the big plug behind the passenger kick panel in the footwell. It is pulled tight and the pins can progressively pull out of the opposing plug, dropping power to dash and security immobilizer. Unplug and check all pins and sockets are the same length (push in from behind if not).

Stuttering while doing consistent speed or slowing

Ford Ranger 2017 2.2l 4x4 ranger 90000 miles
Had a flat battery last week, had to use another car to work, came home and got nrma to jump start it as battery was completely dead by then. Filled up the tank and it felt heavier than usual. Headed off on a 2 hour trip and as soon as I hit above 60km an hour it started to stutter every 5 to 10 seconds. Accelerating is fine, no issues. Only when coasting and slowing and only over that speed. Driving around town doing 50-60 I don't really feel anything.
Had a service done, new filters galore. Still happening.

Is it possible the dead battery has caused some issues.

I was told by the mechanic that it could only be minor and not to pay to diagnose as it could cost thousands and to try and see if anyone has experience with this issue first.

That’s potentially a feedback loop if you’re in a turbo model.

Radio turns on but no audio

Ford Ranger 2018 3.2L Dual Cab XLT 58000 miles
I have absolutely no audio coming through the speakers, not even a sound at max volume, just pure silence. I do have a 4 channel amplifier connected to a module that converts speaker wire to RCA. There is power to both the module and amp and when you touch the RCA cable, there is a humming sound coming from the speakers. Checked fuses and all OK. Was working fine for a year and a half since owning the Ranger until 4 weeks ago. SYNC is up to date also. What am I missing? Could there be an issue with the head unit?

Battery/Electrical

Ford Ranger 1997 2.3lit 200000 miles
I gave someone a jump the other day. When I got home I must have left something on. I'm not sure. I was in the house for 15 minutes and I came out ready to go somewhere and it barely even clicked. Got a new battery today and now it won't even make a sound. None of the lights inside come on. The horn doesn't even work. It is completely dead. I checked the fuses and they all looked good. How do you check the relays to see if they are bad or good.
