Why does the starter fuse blow in the Blazer?

The most common reasons for the starter fuse blowing are:

  1. Short circuit: a short circuit in the starter circuit wiring can cause an excessive flow of current, which can blow the fuse. This could be due to frayed, damaged wires or wires in contact with metal parts of the vehicle.
  2. Faulty starter motor: if the starter motor or its components are drawing more current than the fuse is designed to handle, the fuse will blow. This can happen if the starter motor is defective or if there is abnormally high resistance in the circuit.
  3. Defective starter solenoid: the starter solenoid, which is responsible for sending current to the starter motor, can fail and cause an increase in current, which will blow the fuse.
  4. Faulty ignition switch: if the ignition switch is defective, it can cause an intermittent or inadequate connection, leading to current spikes that blow the fuse.
  5. Battery or alternator issues: problems with the battery, such as low voltage or fluctuations, or a faulty alternator that does not properly regulate the charge, can cause overloads in the vehicle's electrical system, affecting the starter fuse.

If the starter fuse is blown, it's important to identify and fix the cause of the overload before replacing it, to prevent the new fuse from blowing as well.

Other causes of starting failure in the Blazer

The same causes mentioned above can lead to starting failures, in addition to blowing the fuse. If the starter fuse is not blown, these are other possible causes of failure:

  1. Starter relay issues: the starter relay controls the flow of current to the starter motor. If it is defective, it will not send the proper signal to activate the starter motor.
  2. Immobilizer issues: if the vehicle has an anti-theft immobilizer system, a failure in this system can prevent the starter motor from activating.
  3. Fuel system problems: although not directly affecting the starter motor, an issue in the fuel system (such as a faulty fuel pump) can prevent the engine from starting after the starter motor has done its initial work.
