Hello, I am about to buy an Alfa Romeo 146 and I would like to know if it is too expensive to maintain. Are the replacements available? Thank you very much.

Hi, I have a 146 td 97 which is not expensive to maintain and the replacements it uses are Fiat. It is a good car, I recommend it to you.
Tabby from United States 8 years ago
Hi, I also have an Alfa 146 1996 and many of the replacements are shared with Fiat. Look for a reliable mechanic who can advise you better.

Idle speed failure

Alfa Romeo 146 2000  108 miles
Good afternoon, I have an Alfa Romeo 146 engine 2.0 year 2000 and it overheated at its 70 miles. I took the vehicle to the mechanic and the combustion chamber and the engine were serviced. Now, the problem it is having is that the idle speed is not maintained, and I need to keep it accelerated. Even more, a lamplike light with three drops beneath appears on the dashboard and I do not know what it means. If anyone can help me, I will be very thankful.

It is the check engine light. It seems to be a problem with the IAC, which is the sensor that controls the idle speed. The valve must be stuck, so I recommend you to remove it and clean it properly. You should as well service the injectors and then tell us what happened. Good luck.

Temperature

Alfa Romeo 146 1998
Hello, what happens to me is that, when driving at 90 mph or more with the air conditioning turned on, the temperature raises to around 90-95°. On the dashboard, the temperature indicated is 80° but there are as well two lines; the second one indicates 120° and my vehicle is almost at the level of the first line. Is it alright?

That happened to me a while ago and what I did was to blow the cylinder head gasket. I recommend you to check the cooling fan and the battery fuses. Hope it helps.

I have the same car and the temperature has even reached 100°C and nothing happened; they are vehicles of 90°C of temperature. You should check the fuses anyway. Good luck.

Stalls and power loss

Alfa Romeo 146 1997  112000 miles
Hello, I have an Alfa 146 TI and I need your help. After driving for a while, the vehicle suddenly loses power and I cannot even cross the street. I turn the engine off and start it again, and I can drive without a problem for a while. But, some minutes later, the failure appears once again. It has been scanned and no error was indicated; I have also taken it to an Alfa specialized workshop, but nothing has been solved. Does anyone know what might be happening? Thanks.

You need to replace the electric fuel pump for the original one.

Look, on top of the camshaft, there is a sensor. When it fails, it causes the computer to read wrongly the engine's parameters, leaving it without any power. As this failure does not happen regularly, it is not an error that appears when scanning the car. I recommend you to take your vehicle to a reliable mechanic and ask him to check it properly.

Acceleration failures

Alfa Romeo 146 1998  220000 miles
Hi, everyone. I have an Alfa Romeo 1998 engine 1.6 twin spark and, from one moment to the next, it began failing when starting the engine. What happens is that, once I start it, I accelerate it suddenly and the engine backfires, apparently through the butterfly valve. This does not happen if I accelerate it slowly. Even more, if I release the accelerator pedal suddenly, the engine stalls. Every time I accelerate the car, the radiator fan remains turned on and the speed starts fluctuating by itself. Another thing is that there is a red injectionlike light on the dashboard. I've changed the 8 sp… Read complete

You need to check the TPS and IAC sensors, as well as the camshaft.

Starting failure

Alfa Romeo 146 1999  200000 miles
Hello, I have an Alfa 146 1999 turbo diesel 2.0 and there is no way I can make the engine start. I've taken it to the mechanic, who replaced the spark plugs without any positive result. He finally told me that I was not going to be able to make it work because the key code indicator appears on the dashboard and that indicates the vehicle is not reading the signals from the keys. How can I unlock it? Hope you can help me, thanks.

Good night, buddy. You should check the ground wires because the failure might be there. If not, the fuse from the coding system might have blown. There is one fuse under the steering wheel and another one near the brake fluid distribution; check them both. Good luck.
sam from United States 9 years ago
Thank you, Val02. Effectively, the fuse under the steering wheel was blown, but the other one you told me I was not able to find it. Thank you very much for your time and response.

No current in the spark plugs

Alfa Romeo 146 1998  600 miles
I recently bought an Alfa 146 engine 2.0 and I have not been able to drive it properly yet, because many failures have been appearing. At the moment, there is not enough electrical current reaching the spark plugs; it is too low and not constant. Obviously, the engine will never start because of this failure, which is one of the worst that has presented. Does anyone know anything about it? Apart from that, the timing belt occasionally loosens on the side of the fixed tensor and the exhaust pinion. If anyone could give me a hand, I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

Hello, the same happened to me with my Alfa 146. After a year of being stopped, it turned out to be the crankshaft sensor that was causing the problem. Hope it helps.

Starting failure

Alfa Romeo 146 1998  160000 miles
The fuel pump burnt down because it was left without any fuel. I bought a new one and installed it, but now there is no electric current neither in the spark plugs nor in the fuel pump. Might it be the ignition module? Please help me, and thank you very much in advance.

Under the seat, there is a button in a black box; press it until it is hard. That is a sensor that cuts the pump and the current in case of an accident. Hope it helps you solve your inconvenient.

Personal experience

Alfa Romeo 146 1995
I've had my vehicle for 17 years and it keeps pleasing me. It's got 200700 miles and it works perfectly, with a low fuel consumption. It's only deficiencies are the tank filling and the front tires' abnormal wear. Anyway, I would choose it again without any doubt.

Brake fluid indicator and clutch failure

Alfa Romeo 146 1998  105000 miles
The brake fluid indicator light turned on and, immediately after, the clutch stopped working. The braking works perfectly, but the clutch does not work at all. Might there be any connection?

Hi, Leonidas. I had the same problem a month ago and it was the clutch cylinder. As it is hydraulic, it uses the brake fluid.
